How do you get hair off the stem?

The stem in my vacuum unit is covered with hair.
You know the spinning protuberance that comes out of the unit & is inserted into the hose, (I don't know what the spinning stem does, I suppose it provides suction). It is covered in hair & is making a burning smell.
How do I remove hair from the vacuum's spinning protuberance?
