colitis bleeding

colitis bleeding
loose motions everyday in flareups in ulcerative colitis?

I am doing homeopathy treatment with allopathy.i take asacol, entocort. But the problem is not coming under control.i eat very limited food, especially juice of pomogranate, cabbage, carrots etc.and boiled riceand yogurt. But still there is bleeding and loose motions since last 2 months.

Sometimes it is necessary to have a classic treatment, homeopathie and allopathy are not indicated in this case

Treatment for ulcerative colitis depends mainly on the severity of the disease and usually includes medications to control symptoms, such as diarrhea, and changes in diet. A few people have symptoms that are persistent and severe, in some cases requiring treatment with additional medications or surgery.

The goals of treatment include:

Relieving symptoms and ending sudden (acute) attacks as quickly as possible.
Treating complications, such as anemia or infection. Treatment may include taking nutritional supplements to restore normal growth and sexual development in children and teens.
Preventing or delaying new attacks.
Initial treatment
If you don't have any symptoms of ulcerative colitis or if your disease is not active (in remission), you may not need treatment. If you do have symptoms, they usually can be managed with medications to put the disease in remission. It often is easier to keep the disease in remission than to treat a flare-up.

Mild symptoms may respond to antidiarrheal medications and changes in your diet. Sometimes you may need to use enemas or suppositories. Talk with your health professional before taking antidiarrheals. Prescription medications may be used to treat mild symptoms and keep the disease in remission. Usually, corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone or prednisone) are given for a few weeks to control active disease.

Once your symptoms are under control, you may take aminosalicylates (such as sulfasalazine or mesalamine) to keep the disease in remission. Aminosalicylates relieve inflammation in the intestines.

Moderate to severe symptoms usually require corticosteroids to control inflammation. The required dose of steroids may be higher than that needed to treat mild colitis. When inflammation goes away, you will take aminosalicylates to keep the condition in remission.

Immunomodulator medications, such as azathioprine (AZA) or 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), also may be needed for severe cases that cannot be controlled with aminosalicylates alone. These medications suppress the body's immune system to prevent inflammation. Immunomodulators also may be needed to avoid long-term use of steroids, which can cause side effects such as increased risk of infection and osteoporosis.

Ongoing treatment
The goal of ongoing treatment is to keep ulcerative colitis from causing symptoms (in remission). Most people take aminosalicylates (such as sulfasalazine or mesalamine) to prevent symptoms from recurring. Aminosalicylates relieve inflammation in the intestines. If you do have flare-ups, you will be given corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone or prednisone) to control the inflammation.

Usually, steroids are given only long enough to control inflammation. If your condition is so severe that aminosalicylates alone cannot keep you in remission and you would need long-term use of steroids, you may take immunomodulator medications (such as azathioprine [AZA], 6-mercaptopurine [6-MP], or cyclosporine). These strong medications suppress the immune system to prevent inflammation.

Your health professional will want to see you for a follow-up visit about every 6 months while your condition is stable and more frequently if you are having problems. If you are taking medications, you may have laboratory tests every 2 to 3 months. Many people who have ulcerative colitis are so familiar with the course of their condition that they can handle minor flare-ups on their own. In some cases, you may be able to consult with your health professional on the phone for minor problems.

Treatment if the condition gets worse
You may have to receive treatment in the hospital if you have severe, persistent ulcerative colitis with symptoms outside the digestive tract, such as fever or anemia. Treatment includes replacing fluids and electrolytes lost because of severe diarrhea.

Your health professional may increase your dose of corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone or prednisone) to control active disease or immunomodulator medications (such as azathioprine [AZA], 6-mercaptopurine [6-MP], or cyclosporine) to suppress the immune system. However, steroids are not used as long-term therapy because they do not keep ulcerative colitis in remission.

Surgery may be necessary if your symptoms do not improve with medications or you develop complications such as bleeding or perforation of the intestine. Removal of the large intestine (colon) cures ulcerative colitis. Some people with severe ulcerative colitis need urgent surgery to remove their colon. 5 Several types of surgery can be done. For more information, see the Surgery section of this topic.

Some people who have precancerous changes in their colon may decide to have surgery to prevent cancer even if they have no symptoms. In some cases, people decide to have their colon removed to improve their quality of life and to eliminate the risk of colon cancer.

treatment for ulcerative colitis

treatment for ulcerative colitis
is patient with ulcerative colitis always has bloody stool all his life?

i ve been diagnosed as uc one week and i am still in acute attack ..is this attack of bloody stool will go?and what is best treatment for me right now..iam so scared

Ulcerative colitis is an ongoing (chronic) condition that may flare up throughout your life. You may have only mild symptoms or long periods without symptoms. A few people have symptoms that are persistent and severe.

People who have only mild symptoms that respond to home treatment cope well with the disease. But for some others, ulcerative colitis can be a frustrating and depressing condition. The persistent diarrhea that often occurs may make you feel as if your life revolves around the bathroom, and you may be embarrassed by the symptoms and have a poor body image. However, most people with the condition live normal, productive lives using medications to control inflammation and treat symptoms. In some cases, surgery may be needed. Most people who have surgery say it improved their quality of life.

Ulcerative colitis can cause psychological stress, which in turn may affect the course of the disease. If you are struggling with the condition, seek support from family, friends, clergy, or a professional counselor. A strong social network may reduce stress and make the disease less active.

My daughter was 8yrs old and diagnosed with this, she will be 11yrs old April 7. Here are some home remedies you can try.

Eat a high quality diet in between the attacks. If a specific food causes trouble on multiple occasions, avoid it. But if it happens only once, retest. If you find that cabbage makes your symptoms worse, for example, don't avoid all leafy vegetables.

Fiber may be an important food source for patients suffering from colitis. Apples are a very good source of fibre. But avoid fibre during the flare-ups.

People with ulcerative colitis should consider taking a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement that contains at least 400 micrograms of folate.

Emotional stress is the biggest challenge for colitis sufferers. To reduce stress plan a regular exercise program. Exercise will dissipate the effects of stress better than anything.

Inability to digest lactose, the sugar in milk, can be a factor in colitis . By avoiding all milk products, you may be able to reduce your symptoms.

Strict bed rest with plenty of fluids and a high protein diet are very important.

Foods should be attractively prepared and the patient encouraged to eat.

The diet should contain at least 2500 calories a day, given in three or four general meals.

Vitamin K can help to prevent hemorrhage from the bowel.

Avoid eating raw carrots, asparagus, zucchini, squash and other popular vegetables.

Marshmallow root is soothing and healing to inflamed mucous membranes.

Wild yam is known to reduce gastrointestinal upset and nerve pain, and is also considered to be a strong antispasmodic and is potentially anti-inflammatory.

Ginger has traditionally been recommended in Chinese medicine for abdominal bloating, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Cayenne is helpful for various conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, including stomachaches, cramping pains, and gas.

Many doctors suggest eliminating all sugar (including soft drinks and processed foods with added sugar) from the diets of those with ulcerative colitis.

Laughing provides us with the natural inner massage, and through change of mood it can account for up to 30% of cure.

Angelica nutritionally supports the digestive systems.
Mandrake works well for liver, gallbladder and all aspects of digestion.

Diarrh nourishes the spleen, pancreas, stomach and kidneys.

Peppermint calms the stomach, intestinal tract, and the nervous system. It comforts the stomach and nourishes the salivary glands to help with digestion.

Another potential natural remedy is to take oral butyrate itself. Butyrate is the byproduct of fermentation in a healthy gastric tract.

How To Manage Your IBS Symptoms

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms can appear quite suddenly, which cause increased stress. Not knowing when you may have an attack or how to cope with an attack can add undue stress to your life, which will make your IBS even worse. Knowing how to react to an IBS bout and how to prevent attacks will help you cope with your IBS symptoms more readily and will help improve your life.

There are many different names for IBS which is also referred to as spastic colon, spastic bowel, spastic colitis, irritable colon, mucous colitis and nervous or functional bowel. All of these names mean that you have a gastrointestinal disorder that affects mainly the large intestine.

The large intestine is where the stool is produced and stored in the digestive system. If you have IBS symptoms, your bowels may squeeze the stool too lightly or too hard which causes the nerves and muscles to become extra sensitive. This then can cause your food to move either too quickly or too slowly through your intestines, which can cause diarrhea or constipation, as well as other symptoms.

The IBS symptoms that can occur include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constipation, swollen or bloated abdomen and excess gas. If you have had these symptoms regularly for a while, then you will want to visit your doctor. IBS symptoms are very common. In fact, some studies have suggested that up to 20 percent of Americans have it or have had it at one time or another. If you have IBS symptoms, keep in mind that you are not alone in your suffering.

IBS doesn't normally manifest itself until you are an adult. The average age that IBS symptoms begin is around 20 years old. If you have recently been diagnosed with IBS, you need to know that it's something that you can control. Your life does not have to significantly change for you to have a full and productive life.

IBS causes are not very clear. Most doctors define it as a functional disorder due to the fact that it causes the bowels to function wrong. There are a few things that are clear. Stress can make your IBS symptoms worsen. Thus, you may get pains more frequently or suffer from more severe pains. Getting fired, having a death in the family or going through a divorce can cause IBS symptoms to occur more readily and severely.

Still another factor that affects IBS symptoms is your diet. Some foods can cause you to have symptoms, much in the same way as an allergic reaction does. It's usually thought that dairy products, caffeine, fatty foods, alcohol and carbonated drinks can cause IBS symptoms while some people are also affected by tea, citrus fruits and wheat products.

Keep track of the foods that you eat so that you can determine which ones cause you to have IBS symptoms. If you write down everything you eat for a few weeks then you will be able to identify the foods that give you a problem so that you can quit eating them. Although it's a time consuming exercise, the decrease in your IBS symptoms will more than make up for it.

There are also some foods that can help reduce your IBS symptoms. Fiber-rich foods like apples, peaches, broccoli, carrots, cabbage and peas are very helpful if you have constipation dominant IBS. Whole grain foods like bread or cereal are also very good for IBS sufferers. Learning more about fiber-rich foods will help you eat better. If you are not a fan of fruits and vegetables, then you can use a high-fiber pill or supplement, but the fruits and vegetables work much better.

Taken as a dietary supplement, IBS DropsRx has an antispasmodic effect on the gut and intestines; it delivers a curative effect against IBS providing reversal of the condition. IBS DropsRx acts as a calming demulcent, it forms a soothing film when exposed to mucous membranes, relieving irritation of the gut and inflamed mucous membranes. As a result, it is also an analgesic that provides immediate relief of pain and discomfort associated with IBS.

Your doctor may suggest fiber supplements or laxatives for constipation or medicines to decrease diarrhea, such as Lomotil or loperamide (Imodium). An antispasmodic is commonly prescribed, which helps to control colon muscle spasms and reduce abdominal pain. Antidepressants may relieve some symptoms. However, both antispasmodics and antidepressants can worsen constipation, so some doctors will also prescribe medications that relax muscles in the bladder and intestines, such as Donnapine and Librax. These medications contain a mild sedative, which can be habit forming, so they need to be used under the guidance of a physician.

Extracts in IBS DropsRx provide a calming sedative effect. They deliver a profound calming effect not only on the physical imbalance caused by IBS but also on an emotional level. They have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-spasmodic effects. Learn how to manage your IBS symptoms with IBS DropsRx in http://www.naturespharma.org.

colitis treatment

colitis treatment
When you feel a flare up of ulcerative colitis coming on, what is the best treatment to stop it in it's track?

I did the steroids a few years ago but my new gastroenterologist is not a fan of steroids so he put me on 6-mercaptopurine. Since I did not have a flare up for almost 3 years, we stopped the dose but now I feel a flare up coming on and 6-MP takes about 3 months to start kicking in.

What is the best medication to stop the UC and make it go back into remission.

If I go to the Dr, he will just immediately order a colonoscopy. So before I do that, I want to hear what some of you think.

Steroids are horrible. They make your face get huge, they make you hungry, and they make you fat. Also I guess they do something to your bones.

I want to avoid steroids at all costs.

well i had ulcerative colitis (i had the surgery done) and from my experience with all the meds, steriods is the only way to stop it immediately. what i did was i did steriods and 6mp at the same time and tapered off the steriods so by the time i was off the steriods the 6 mp would have kicked in. i hated the steriods and they make you have low bone density and it makes them weak.

colitis cure

colitis cure
I have severe Ulceritive Colitis. Anyone have any advise on cures without prescription drugs?

I have had UC for about 4 years. I have been taking prednisone and immune suppresants for a long time. My doctor would like to remove my colon, but I would like to find out if there are any other alternitive choices that I have not explored! Any advice?

Thanks

I had a friend that had this and she had to stay away from greens when she ate, along with anything that had seeds (including strawberries...those little black seeds on the skin of the strawberry would do her in every time!).

She also ordered a vitamin from Shaklee. I can't remember the name of it; however, if you talked to a dealer of their vitamins, I'm sure they could direct you to the right thing (it's actually 2 things...one was a powder that you drink and the other was a tiny round white pill and both restored the natural flora that is in most peoples bowels; however, people that have UC don't have this or have very little of this).

I think I would give these other options a try before the surgery; however, if it doesn't work, definitely talk with your doctor and get a second and third opinion before any surgery!

Good luck!
